“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”
Anne Frank
‘Harsevak’ (one who serves), is a brainchild of an 11 year old student of Delhi Public School. The organization was conceived during the world’s most challenging year of this decade: 2020, which marked the beginning of the longest pandemic of corona virus.
‘Harseva’ is a Sanskrit word which means: Service (seva ) for all (har).
March is the awaited birthday month of the founder of Harsevak, however the birthday of March 2020 was a turning point and a defining moment for Jia who had to cancel her party and grasp the meaning and impact of an overnight, abrupt nationwide lockdown!
The lockdown of the human grid system, the sudden shortage of food supplies and unavailability of essential items for the massive population of India came as a shock for everyone. However for a young child it was a harsh epiphany. Realization hit hard through heart-breaking images from television news channels, newspapers and social media about real world truths and cruelty of life for the marginalized sections of society (especially orphaned children, homeless, destitute women and the daily wagers ).
Thus out of inquiry; How can we help?!
‘Harsevak’ was set in motion!
It was launched with the realization: there was much to do if we looked up and outside of our comfort niche.
Someone’s waste could be a luxury for another! Extra food, recycled-up cycled clothes, blankets, books, utensils, stationary supplies, sanitary napkins, electronic devices and many other such commodities had the potential to provide sustenance and practically change the lives of the economically weaker population, orphaned children, abandoned senior citizens, widows/destitute women, slum dwellers and daily wage laborers etc.
Harsevak is also closely connected with the environment and its preservation emphasizing on reuse, recycle and restoration of nature and mother earth. We believe that there is a way for humanity to share the resources of our planet and offer our dues in return.
From a humble beginning; where good deeds begin at home and the neighborhood community to now being on its way to a registered trust, Harsevak has travelled a bit.
We hope to contribute selflessly with the help of our ever growing family of volunteers – Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (in Sanskrit, means: The world is a family )
“Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person.”
