The ‘Mission Life’ program is an initiative of the Indian government for adopting a lifestyle
which is sustainable and environment friendly. It was launched by the Hon’ble Prime
Minister Shri Narendra Modi at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties
(COP26) in Glasgow. The 3 main goals of the mission are:

1. Change in Demand (Phase I): This is a friendly nudge to all humanity across
continents to imbibe simple practices which are sustainable and environment
friendly in our daily lives e.g carrying a cloth reusable bag/ own water bottle
wherever we travel, even if we are on vacation, using public transport where
possible, eating food with less carbon foot print, prevent food waste/ sharing large
meals/ consuming less than what we give to our planet and so on..
2. Change in Supply (Phase II): A continuous and persistent change in our daily habits
and routine on an individual basis would lead to widespread results in the
community and finally at a global level. This would force the industries to change
their practices which would be more focused on the planet as a whole.
3. Change in Policy (Phase III): A change such as above would be followed by a mass
movement of sorts which would influence the demand-supply chain of the market
leading to industrial as well as government policy makers being involved in this
mission.
Mission Life is important to India and its youth because this country will be in hands of the
youth of today in the near future..It is our responsibility to ensure that us and the coming
generations have a green and not a dead planet to live on.
For this, we have to imbibe an environment friendly attitude as a rule and not just a ‘choice’.
Our daily lives from school, to college, work environment, use of stationery, water, food
waste and garbage disposal must be streamlined for everyone as a matter of habit. Policies
and rules of governments across nations must be uniform so that no political or physical
boundaries can change the message we need to spread across the globe.
The youth must ensure the learning phase of education is combined with recycling of books,
stationary and paper must be worshipped, since we cannot afford to cause more deforestation.
On this front technology is paperless and could help, however-waste disposal is our next big
challenge which we should work for collectively.
There is diversity on this planet along with socio-economic divisions. It is upto the youth to
come together and think of our brotherhood, to share whatever we can and reduce waste by
sharing excess of material where its required. Food waste in affluent countries is a major
issue and should be tackled at war footing since as a responsible global community, we
cannot allow people to die of hunger, where food waste exists on one side of the world.
The same issue is for many natural resources including water/ solar power .
Youth fashion can also be a game changer for the environment, if its responsible fashion.
Cloth waste and manufacturing waste can be reduced by recycling and sharing clothes,
responsible buying from sustainable companies and brand consciousness for the carbon
footprint.
Awareness about everyday consumption of single use plastic, bottled water, sodas and food
could help curb the wate related to plastics and water. Imagine the reduction of carbon
footprint if all the youth and children carried their own waterbottles, shunned single use
plastic and ate from responsible food outlets or better still cared for homecooked food as well
as sharing of food-water etc.
The youth are the soul of Mission Life and will be the main source of energy for this global
program.
Together we can and we will!!!
